Her performance in the award-winning film ‘Thenmerku Paruvakaatru’ won her rave reviews from the print and television media besides the movie-going public. Born and brought up in the national capital territory of Delhi, Vasundhara’s portrayal of the typical village girl Pechi in ‘Tenmerku…’ hardly gave anyone any hint that it was the same girl who grew up in the cosmopolitan New Delhi.
Vadundra debuted in Kollywood in 2006 with the Aarya-starrer ‘Vattaram’, which was directed bySaran. Though she didn’t play the heroine, she was noticed for her unique voice and slim frame. She followed it up in an unlikely role of the wife of a don in ‘Jeyamkondan’ in 2008 and played one of the five heroines in director Jananathan’s ‘Jeyam Ravi-starrer ‘Peraanmai’ (2009).
‘Tenmerku…’ has got her going in the industry as she has signed as one of the two heroines in ‘Poraali’ opposite director-actor Sasikumar. The film, directed by Sasi’s friend and director-actor Samuthirakkani, has her again playing a village belle’s character. Is this a conscious attempt on her part to continue to ‘specialize’ in playing the rural girl’s role?
“Definitely not,” smiles Vasundhara and adds that she has never seen a village in her life till she started working for ‘Tenmerku….’. Says Vasundhara: “I did a lot of homework for the role and applied make-up to look dark and convincing as Pechi. Me and the Unit members felt we were in for something ‘special’ during the making of ‘Tenmerku…’ and were thrilled beyond words when ‘Tenmerku…’ was selected as the best film by the national awards Jury.”
“Though I’m getting a lot of village-girl characters, I can’t really complain. I believe that more than the urban girl’s roles, these roles give me lots of scope to exhibit whatever acting credentials I possess. The experience of staying in an actual village (during shooting) and spending time with the simple village folks is exciting,” says Vasundhara, the smile well in place.
